What does a lump in a vein mean?!

Question:

What does a lump in a vein mean?

I had surgery on Tuesday and now I've just noticed a small circular lump in a vein on my hand. It's sore to the touch. What could this be and should I get it checked out? Thanks in advance.

Answers:

It's probably a clot from where you had an IV or something from the surgery. If you notice that the bump getting larger underneath your skin or if it seems to be bleeding out underneath your skin then you need to go to the ER because that means that you have a bleed underneath your skin. Otherwise your body will just slowly carry it away and it will dissipate...it's kind of like a scab that your body has made after having something in your vein (being an IV or something else from the surgery). I remember that when they tried to start an IV in my arm and they missed I got a large bump from it, that was very sore, and painful to touch, but over the period of a few months it healed and went away.
