Is it possible to have muscle loss with a knee injury?!

Question:

Is it possible to have muscle loss with a knee injury?

I hyperextended my knee a few weeks back, and it is almost healed with 90% range of motion. But about 1 week after he injury I noticed my anterior thigh muscles getting weaker and smaller. I can grossly see that I have less muscle on the injured leg. Any ideas as to what is going on and what can I do to make it better?

Answers:

Yep of course you will see atrophy of the muscle. Due to probable pain and needed healing time the muscle isn't being used as much.
If you up to 90% ROM then it should be just a matter of time before the muscle starts to regain strength.
The only thing you can do to make it better is to give it time to complete to heal and then slowly do some excersices of the leg to rebuild the muscle tone.
One good one may be to cross your legs so that the effected leg is hanging. Flex your ankle in an upward motion, lift your leg to full ROM and do a 10-20 count hold.
