Is it possible to be "immune" to certain pain medications?!

Question:

Is it possible to be "immune" to certain pain medications?

Last night I was reallllly sore from starting a new exercise plan and took a lortab which I had leftover from getting my wisdom teeth removed. Well, it didn't do anything for the pain after getting my teeth out but I figured I'd give it a shot. Sure enough, nothing.

Also had the same experience with Aleve (naproxen) one time and I remember being really upset because then I couldn't take anything else for 12 hours and I was still in pain (from a headache or cramps or something). So, I haven't taken it since. I usually only take Motrin (ibuprofen).

Is this all in my head or do other people have this problem too?

Just to clarify: I haven't built up a tolerance to lortab or naproxen, it's just that the few times I've taken them, they don't work.

Answers:

I don't think that you can be immune to a medication per se but I think that there are certain tolerance levels for every individual. Some things work extremely well for one but the next person laugh at it being called a pain medication. Then there is that certain medication are meant for differet kinds of pain. Lortab- hydrocodone and acetaminophen doesn't work for me but would definately knock many on their butts! Maybe you can find alternative treatments since it is unlikely that a doctor would prescribe something stronger for aches and pains from working out. Heat therapy is usually a good alternative or maybe massage. Good luck!!! And I feel your pain!!!
