Answers:

Back Pain has so many causes, and manifest in so many different ways. Its difficult to pin point where the pain is when you say upper back near the spine. The spine runs from the base of your skull, neck, down to the top of your butt. If you are having pain between the shoulder blades, and this is something new, and it is relieved when you lay flat on your back, my bet would be that you strained the muscles in that area. If you have done some lifting and/or bending more that usual, it is likely that you have strained those muscles. Give it 2 or 3 days and don't stress that area and it should get better. If it does not ease up after a few days, its time to schedule a doctors visit. There are some pretty simple test that can identify the cause of the problem.
