Swollen hand: If you press it, it stays sort of indented for a little while, lik!

Question:

Swollen hand: If you press it, it stays sort of indented for a little while, like a tempurpedic mattress?!?

My fiance hit a brick with his fist, and broke his wrist. Doctors gave him a black splint type thing that he has to wear for a month, but the area above it, around the knuckles, is still very swollen, a week later. More strangely though, if you press it, the skin stays indented and then VERY slowly comes back up, it feels almost like clay. I've never had swelling do this before, is this normal? He doesn't want to go back to see the doctor because he says it's feeling better. Should he go anyway, or is this kind fo swelling to be expected?

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, it's a relief to hear that this isn't particularly abnormal. He is not taking any painkillers or anything, though he took some ibuprofen yesterday.

Answers:

This is a fairly normal reaction as with swelling there is a restricted blood flow to the area. Although if this persists or he develops numbness of the affected area then he should once again consult your doctor. Also you should get him to use the acronym RICE. It stands for rest, ice, compression, elevation. Follow this carefully and you should see some results. I wish him the best and I hope this helps.
