What could possibly be wrong with my knee?? (Help?)?!

Question:

What could possibly be wrong with my knee?? (Help?)?

I'm 21, I played sports from age 4-19, I was a catcher for softball for the majority of that time and it certainly took its toll on my knees. For the last year or so everytime I walk up the stairs there is a creeking sound that comes from my left knee.. and then everytime I start to jog about 15 minutes in my knee really starts bothering me (there is no creeking sound though) I don't have health insurance so I am unable to get this checked out, but I was wondering if anyone has any idea of what this could be, nerve damage? tendons? etc? and I am supposed to be getting back into sports in the fall (tackle football) so do you think it's safe to play, if so are there any exercises I could do to strengthen my knee to make this problem go away or subside? Thank you so much for your help!

Answers:

The creeking is called crepitus and is perfectly normal unless painful. The pain in your knee from running can be several things. Could be a tear in your meniscus, could be patellofemoral syndrome. If you dont have insurance to see a doctor then the best you can do is to strengthen the muscles in your legs, especially the ones in your hips and butt. This can take some of the stress off of your knees and place is on your muscles, which when stronger, will be better able to take the stress. I think you will be fine to play football providing you can tolerate the pain.
