I've had knee surgery before, is it ok to workout legs?!

Question:

I've had knee surgery before, is it ok to workout legs?

i had knee surgery about 2 years ago. I had acl, pcl, and meniscus repair on my right knee. sometimes when i workout my legs, my knee swells up a bit, and sometimes the muscle on the back of my knee hurts a bit. Should i continue working out my legs with less weight? my doctor also told me that when i workout my legs, i should not do full motions. he said to stop around a 90 degree angle. i haven't gone back to the doctor in a while since he charges a lot per session. i do also play basketball a lot but i never really get any problems playing basketball.

Answers:

Its extremely important that you continue to strength train you legs despite the swelling. If you dont then the muscles will get weak and then you will have problems with other activities that you currently dont have problems with. The doc is right that you should not squat much beyond 90 degrees. You probably have some scar tissue in the knee that is causing the swelling. Try this...place an ice bag directly on the knee ASAP after doing anything active...keep it on for 15 mins. That will help decrease some of the swelling.
