I'm just wondering what your opinion is on an inguinal hernia?!

Question:

I'm just wondering what your opinion is on an inguinal hernia?

I've had a lump in my groin area for years, and when I went to the doctors a long time ago, she said to come back if it gets worse. It hasn't really gotten worse, but I was worried so I decided to get it checked again. When I went today, she felt it and said she's 99.9% sure it's an inguinal hernia. She said we'd keep an eye on it, but we won't do anything about it for now. I'm also getting an ultra sound to confirm that is what the lump is. Anyway, I've heard that you should get surgery on a hernia no matter how bad it is. Does anyone know if I should try to have surgery to repair it? The lump isn't always there, but when it is, it's very uncomfortable and painful. If I can get rid of it, shouldn't I? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

Answers:

I was diagnosed with a right inguinal hernia when I was 26 years old. I would move or lift something and the pain would be excruciating- at first they thought it was my appendix--but that would've been too easy. Since I'm a female, I was advised to have it surgically fixed because I would have problems when I got pregnant and tried to carry a child, so I had it surgically fixed.

I'm not going to sugar coat this for you, it hurt a lot but the alternative is worse--do you know what a hernia really is? It is the muscles in your abdomen that have split open from either lifting something too heavy or pushing or pulling something heavy and the "hernia" or bump that you feel is actually your intestine pushing through it. This can become very serious because it can cause an infection in your bowel and worse a blockage because it's like having a kink in your gas line in your barbecue grill--the gas doesn't flow in correctly--in your bowel, it can cause a blockage and then you're talking major surgery...........get it done as soon as possible-----you won't be able to drive for at least 3-4 weeks and there will be other physical limitations. WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT LIFT ANYTHING AND I MEAN ANYTHING OVER 5 LBS FROM THE GROUND UP FOR AT LEAST 2 MONTHS OR LONGER. You can cause another hernia.........good luck to you.........
