A bad headache in one small spot over the temple? What can it be?!

Question:

A bad headache in one small spot over the temple? What can it be?

My roommate gets these HORRIFIC headaches just in one spot right where his right temple is. He says its just like a dime sized area, but the pain is so bad he can't describe. He gets quiet, eyes get glazed and nothing seems to help. He says the pain isn't senstive to noise and light like a migraine would be. Also that laying down seems to make it worse, like there is more blood flow making it throb. He used to get them every couple of weeks, but here lately he's been getting them like every other day or so. I'm concerned something might be seriously wrong. He hasn't seen a doctor yet because he has no insurance here. Any ideas what might be going on?? Might he be in serious danger or is it just serious pain?

Answers:

It may be serious. There is a condition called Temporal Arteritis that occurs at the temple. At times the swelling of the artery is visible. There is an actual bulge at that location. It is extremely painful. He may also be experiencing migraines-which also tend to occur in the same area. I speak from personal experience. Migraines also have the potential to be debilitating. He should not ignore it because there are many possibilities ( Aneurysm, tension headaches, etc.) that I can think of and none of them good.
