How do you tell if the big left toe is broken?
my mother either stubbed or broke her big left toe...How can u tell if is broken or stubbed... About a quarter of an inch behind the nail and then all the way to the tip of the toe it is red. she has kind of jagged toes to begin with so it is sort of hard to tell or look for a dis formation...when there not very normal shaped. She has been in lots of pain for about 2 hours now from it. it hurts bad if you push down on the joint and it hurts bad when she walks.

Only way to tell for sure is have it x-rayed. I "stubbed" my toe several years ago and, after spending the night with my foot in ice water to kill the pain, I went in the next morning for an x-ray. Sure enough, it was broken. They didn't "set" it. They taped my big toe to the toe next to it and I wore a big bedroom slipper on that foot and limped for a few weeks.
