If your BIG toe is fractured/injured how long should you leave on a splint? See !

Question:

If your BIG toe is fractured/injured how long should you leave on a splint? See details inside please?

Ok my big toe and sesamoid bone [the thing just under/behind your big toe] was injured about 3 days ago and it didn't hurt that bad just minor pain but today I reinjured it on accident and it is a shotting/throbbing pain on and off. I put it in my own make-shift splint I was just wondering how long to leave it on. If it makes any difference, its on my left foot and I have not put any ice on it or anything besides prop it up. It is not injured severly just enough to know its there when I'm walking. How long should I leave on the splint or do I even need one?

Answers:

If you think that you've actually done any damage, you should go to a doctor.

For most injuries,the protocol is:

Rest (don't walk too much)
Ice (20 minutes,3x a day)
Compression (splint is good)
Elevation (sit with your foot propped up).

If you don't go to the doctor,I would say leave the splint there for at least a couple of days,a week or so would probably be better.

Hope that helps.
