My son has poision Ivy.?!

Question:

My son has poision Ivy.?

Any suggestion? Do I keep it covered? I put anti itch spray on it but what else can I do?

Answers:

An over the counter antihistamine such as benedryl can help with the itching. It is available in pills (for allergies) or as a topical cream.

Hydrocortizone cream contains a mild steroid which will help reduce the inflammation at the site. There are some creams that contain both topical Benedryl and Hydrocortizone.

Be sure to use all of these medications according to their instructions.

If the reaction from the poison ivy is not resolving in the amount of time aloted on the ointments you're using, check with your physician. Some doctors may put your son on a regimen of stronger prescription steroids until the reaction clears up.

Other home remedies that can help with the itching are oatmeal baths and certain soaps.

It is not necessary to cover the rash unless it is weaping. In which case it is a good idea to cover it loosly with an absorbant bandage and change it when it becomes saturated.
