My mom wants to get lap ban surgery?!

Question:

My mom wants to get lap ban surgery?

Im worried about her, im close with my mom. What are chances anything could go wrong? Is it really successfull?

Answers:

Lap banding surgery is done laparoscopically, meaning the only intrusions into the abdominal cavity are with couple of small tubes that the instruments go through. Yes, it is still surgery, and yes, something could go wrong, but in general, laparoscopic surgery has somewhat lower complication rates that open surgery and MUCH better recovery time.

In addition, the lap banding surgery has little risk of infection compared to other procedures because none of the GI tract is opened. Since the inside of the GI tract is not sterile, this is a major risk of infection in other surgeries but not in lap banding. Despite this, gall bladder removals and appendectomies are still considered very safe, so lap banding should be much safer.

As always, discuss these and any questions with your doctor.
