Question:

How and why do my eyes change colour when i have been crying, or the day after had a big nite out.?

my eyes are usually a medium/dark blue, however at these times change to green or aqua kind of colour.

Answers:

Eye color is caused by the density and structure of pigments in the iris. There is no known genetic advantage for having one particular eye color, so the distribution is pretty random.

Many people experience permanent eye color change during infancy (from blue to darker usually) or during puberty. The causes are not well understood for those changes.

Yours are in response to stress. Even a fun time can be a stress. Crying or activities that place your body in non-standard positions (Yes, I am primarily talking about sex here) cause an increase in pressure within the eye. Under certain conditions that can put extra force on the iris, which shifts the density of the pigments. Blue eyes have a lower density, so when the pressure goes up, your eyes get darker.

This has a tiny but real chance of being an indicator that something is wrong with your eyes. The change you describe does not happen to most people under any circumstances, so it means you are more sensative to pressure changes. Think about seeing an eye doc for a pressure test and general eye evaluation.

The only clear case I ever saw myself was a woman with striking pale ice blue eyes that changes to a deep jade green when she had a seizure in our office. I am NOT NOT NOT saying you in danger or having a medical problem. I'm not a doc, and there is too much missing info... but having said that, it would be worth at least mentioning to your regular doc to see if she wants to send you to an opthalmic specialist...

If you are diabetic or have a history of stroke, sooner would be better than later...
