How do I treat a broken toenail?

My brother accidentally walked into my foot and my toenail was split across (he was wearing shoes; I wasn't). The nail is not completely split. How should I treat this? Should I cut the nail off? Should I keep it bandaged? How long will it take for my nail to heal?
