One-handed work after finger fracture repaired with pin?!

Question:

One-handed work after finger fracture repaired with pin?

After a finger fracture is repaired with a pin, why can't a patient return to one-handed work until the pin is removed? maybe it's because of pain medication? maybe it's to prevent any chance of causing more damage to the injury while it's healing? what do you think?

Answers:

Im the safety specialist at my company and i work with our worker comp company. yes, you can have an employee come back to work to do a job with one hand. its called "modified duty", which im sure you are familar with. What i do is discuss with the employees supervisor what types of work they will be doing with one had (kind of like comprising a mini job description). the employee brings that job description to the doctor, and the doctor will ok it. that way we get the employee back to work and it cuts down on our LWDs.
