Pain in my back, what is wrong?!

Question:

Pain in my back, what is wrong?

Hello, well, I have not been in any accident and it has been awhile since I could have "strained" my back, but it still hurts now and again. I have been to the doctor and gotten X-Rays but they found nothing wrong.

Even if I sit for a long time the middle of my back, and sometimes my lower back, will become sore, or if I lay in a kind of contorted position. I take Glucosomine Chondroitin every morning and I drink plenty of milk so that should rule out any bone problems.

I also have never been diagnosed with Scoliosis, and have had regular checks at school. I've laid on massage beds, but once I want to get off, my back feels worse.

What shocks me about it is that I have been having these pains for over 3-4 years now, and I am only 15, can someone tell me what is wrong with me? Or tell me of some supplement to take, or some exercise to aid in making this pain go away?

Thanks, Stewey

I'm wondering if it could be my bed, it's a metal futon type thing, but I had these pains before the bed.

Answers:

What you're describing sounds really similar to pains that I had in my lower back when I was around your age. An intense, kind of overwhelming sensation just above the pelvis, right in the center of the back, right? It was never a dull ache that grew and grew until it felt really awful, it was just like a sharp stab that came on very suddenly, and occasionally would bring me to the ground, it hurt so badly. It even knocked the wind out of me a couple of times.

My back was routinely checked by our school nurse when I was in school, and she said that I had a spine and everything. I had physicals, and the doctors always said that I looked normal. You're probably not going to believe me when I say this, but I believe you're just experiencing growing pains. Your torso stretches out quite a lot during your adolescent years, as do your legs, which could be why the pain always situates itself in your lower torso. It should go away in a couple of years. For the moment, you've been checked and checked and checked again, and no one can find anything wrong with you.

So don't worry about it. It's likely that more people are experiencing this (or have experienced this, like I did) than you're thinking. If your back starts to hurt, just shift your position until it feels better. There's nothing more you can really do but try to ignore it.
