Can I remove my own stitches?

I sliced by toe up pretty bad a week ago, and my doctor instructed me to come back a week later to get them removed, but I'm really not feeling up to the task of driving all the way to the hospital for a seemingly easy procedure. How can I go about doing this myself? There's 5 of them along my toe and it looks healed.

I once saw a show on tv where they just sterilized scissors and snipped the knots and slowly pulled it, should I do the same, will it hurt?
