How do you know when STITCHES are infected? and when to take them out.?!

Question:

How do you know when STITCHES are infected? and when to take them out.?

I've never had stitches before and they look purple, like it has alot of bruising. but my cut seems to be closing up well.

Also when should I have them taken out, and can you keep them in longer?

I cannot have the doctor who put them in tell me because I had these done while I was sailing in Canada. So I had the stitches done while in CA. But hey- thanks for assuming I'm a moron.

Answers:

Your stitches are infected if they are red,swollen,and/or warm to the touch. Your doctor should have advised you on when you should have them removed, and if you can't remember, call the office ASAP and find out! The average for a minor wound is a week to ten days. You really shouldn't keep them in any longer than necessary, so make an appointment for a suture removal on the date your doctor tells you.
