I cant sleep. This is horrible!?!

Question:

I cant sleep. This is horrible!?

Please help. I cant fall alseep until around midnight every night and i have to wake up at 6am. It wasnt a problem at first, but it's really catching up with me. I hurts to keep my eyes open!Every night I lay in bed for hours with thoughts racing through my head, not letting me relax enough to fall asleep. I tried counting sheep as corny as that sounds... i tried drinking warm milk before bed, i even tried watching Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood. I dont want to try sleeping pills. PLEASE I'M SO TIRED! I cant even function right anymore!

I do work out evry night from 7-9pm at the gym. Could that be the problem? Those are my only free hours when i can go work out so i cant stop going or change my schedule.

Is there any hope?

Answers:

first of all try to do the excersize earlier--it gets your heart rate up and your mind racing. also try turning out all the lights in the places you are right before (e.g. if you have flueorescent lights in your bathroom and you're in there right before bed trade it in in favor of a dimmer light/ a small night light). Also, don't look at anything stressful right before bed (if this is feasible). Sleep specialists also suggest that if you can't sleep you should just sit and read or something. In addition: don't look at screens (tv, computer, etc.) before bed--the light movement and the light quality in the screen tells your mind to wake up. You can also try these excersizes: when you're lying in bed at night, tense up one part of your body (e.g. your shoulders or your neck) and then relax it. When you tense it up count to about 15 and then relax. Then do the same thing, but add another body part (e.g. this time if you tensed up your neck the previous time, tense up your neck AND your shoulders). Keep doing this, moving down your body, adding things to tense up and relaxing it, until you are at the last step, and your whole body is tensed up from your head to your toes. Then let it all out and relax. This excersize should be done lying on your back.
Another thing that has worked for me/other people:
right before you get into bed/sitting in bed sit on your knees and put your head down on the bed in front of you, so you're hunched over and your head is lower than your heart and is near your knees. For some reason the blood rushing to your head calms you down :)
Hope this helps! Just try not to think about not sleeping too much when you're in bed--it gets you revved up!
