Why is my ankle swelling?!

Question: Why is my ankle swelling?
Why is my ankle swelling?
I broke my ankle in 2007. As a result I had surgery & had a metal plate & 5 screws put in. I have not had any complications with my ankle since the surgery really. In the beginning if I was on it a lot it would swell, but that has not happened in the last 3 yrs. All of the sudden this evening I felt a burning sensation in my ankle and when I raised my pant leg I noticed my ankle was very swollen. I touched in on the scar from my surgery and it was painful to the touch. It does not hurt to bad when I put weight on it, just mainly hurts to the touch.

What would cause my ankle to swell like this? I have not done anything to re-injure it or strain it in anyway.

Answers:

I'm not a doctor, so I can only "guess".

Last week you seemed to have an infection from a "dental issue".
Is it possible that whatever caused that infection traveled through your system,
and found something that it "liked" in your repaired ankle?
The metal plate, & 5 screws, are still "foreign bodies".
That infection may have "found a new home".

I strongly encourage you to at least call "ask a nurse".

I've possibly seen too many episodes of "House".
OR, "just enough".

difficult case. unless somehow a systemic infection caused the swelling, id have to say its peripheral nerve damage. If persistent ice doesn't bring the swelling down I'd go see your doctor immediately because it could be a more serious issue.

regards.

You may have some sort of infection, or something could be wrong with the screws causing friction and inflamatory response, best to see a doctor and have ti checked out

I'm really not sure but I think you should go to a doctor for that and they can tell you what's going on.
