Thanks for the replies so far. I do not need basic potty training. It would just be nice to know the optimal posture learn the most efficient and healthy way to defecate. My parents did teach me the basics but I think it could be perfected to achieve optimum results. I think this is something that could be taught as part of health education.

Thank Renee. I got one of those Nature's Platforms and am going to give that a try. I'll experiment and try to come up with the most efficient method possible. I suspect it's whatever feels most natural.

Ok. I'm not an expert, but this is what the experts have TOLD ME.
First, buy yourself a short stool (sorry. no pun intended. I mean a short bench) to place your feet upon. Squatting IS the best posture; alas, people don't squat outside the woods in the US. Thus, your feet need to be raised a good 10 inches or so. There is a plastic "bench" sold specifically for this purpose, shaped so that it is easily slid close to the base of the toilet to get it out of the way when not in use.

The squatting position does a couple of things: aligns the (idealy shaped) colon properly which assists defecation and prevents undo stress upon the heart; it also allows the thighs to support the abdominal muscles (which helps prevent damage to the abdominal wall and support to internal organs). If Elvis had put his feet on one of these contraptions, he probably wouldn't have died that morning.

In any case, when sitting in this "squatting" position, with the feet atop a step or bench, sit straight. Try for the perfect posture taught by Emily Post. Experiment. Sometimes leaning forward with the chest out elongates the torso more. FYI, if you strain, you interrup the normal peristalsis, which in the long run could cause additional constipation. A move recommended by therapists: while sitting, raise your arms over your head, and move your rib cage side to side.

If you're having constipation issues, there are three easy things I rely on: 1st thing in the morning, drink 12-16 oz of a really hot tea or water w/ lemon. I cannot stress enough on the 1st thing, and HOT. Drink ginger tea. Drink Black Cherry Juice. Also, no bananas, vitamins or vitamin drinks before noon. For gas, drink fennel seed tea.
