I had shoulder surgery and two weeks afterward the tip of my thumb won't bend,1 !

Question:

I had shoulder surgery and two weeks afterward the tip of my thumb won't bend,1 week later I can't bend index

As I stated...I recently had shoulder surgery on April 11 2007. Two weeks after the surgery after the nerve block had worn off, I noticed that I couldn't bend the tip of my thumb, I can still bend the thumb, but not the tip. I told this to my doctor who said it may still be the nerve block wearing off. Well, one week after that (3 total), now the tip of my index finger lost strength as well and won't bend all the way. It's really frustrating because I was prepared for issues with my shoulder, but wasn't expecting to encounter the problems with my hand. It aches all the time clear up to my elbow. As I had said, I was able to bend it shortly after the surgery...so i don't think that it was injured during the surgery. The hand specialist I'm seeing thinks that the nerve could have been kinked by the shoulder brace I wore, which caused intense pain in my elbow that hurt more than the shoulder itself. Anyways, i guess I'm trying to find out if anybody might have some info...thanks

Answers:

hmm. this is an interesting question to me. Are you getting any swelling in your arm? because if so the swelling could be going down to your hand, because remember, your arm is always down and not always elevated. so there is a possibility that you have some swelling down your arm. do you take anti inflammatories? you may want to if its swelling.
also, is it tingling or numb sometimes? because you could have some issues with your nerves in your arm and hand. If it continues to bother you, go back to the dr and see if you should see a neurologist for this issue. I hope that things work out for you!
