Question:

RSD patient needs surgery for herniated disc, what kind of result could happen?

75yrs. old, female, has herniated disc, pinched nerve, needs surgery for the disc but afraid to because of possible results with RSD can you help her with a descision, or with medical info on what to expect?

Answers:

I'm assuming that the patient already has RSD/CRPS because most people have never heard of this disease, and it's very rare. First of all where does the patient have the RSD/CRPS? If it is in the location where the surgery will be done you risk having the area very agitated, the pain flared up, and possibly spreading the RSD/CRPS. If the area where the surgery will take place is not affected with RSD/CRPS the only real risk that you have is the possibility that the pain could spread to the surgical site, but that is fairly rare- I have my RSD/CRPS in my right leg and I've had 4 spine surgeries (to implant a Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS)), my has had an incision in it (for the pocket for my SCS battery) in which I've had the battery replaced, and I haven't had my pain spread to any other areas. There still is the possibility that it would spread though even thoug it is rare. I would talk to the doctor about this issue and get their opinion, the pain doctor's opinion (or the doctor who is caring for the RSD/CRPS), and possibly a second opinion on the surgery.
