Going barefoot for school health check-ups?!

Question:

Going barefoot for school health check-ups?

Sometimes at my school health check-ups they make you take off your shoes and socks somewhere very far away and they make you walk around he dirty floor with glass even though they aren't taking your height and weight or anything. Sometimes the nurses ask to see the soles of your feet too! Some of my friends can't stand it. Does anyone know why?

Sometimes they still ask us to take off our shoes and socks even though they are not gonna check them. I don't understand why. Can't we just leave them on?

Answers:

I seriously doubt there is any glass on the floor. Really, you don't have to be so afraid to get hurt or sick from going barefoot for a few steps, feet are not gross or dirty or dangerous but are in fact a lot tougher than many people think! It's a sad thing that so many people believe that going barefoot is such a big deal, that you'll end up with your foot cut or pick up some terrible disease when putting your foot down for a bit. I've been barefoot *everywhere* for the past ten years, including outdoors, including train stations and many other places where there really is glass laying around, and I have NEVER cut my feet. Your feet aren't made of tissue paper. A doctor should see your entire naked body, should see your posture, see if you have flat feet or crooked toes. It's not going to hurt you to go barefoot for checkups.

Added: If they don't check your feet close-up, that doesn't mean they didn't get a look at your total posture. A good doctor can see a lot from the overall impression. Sometimes with all the detailed tests and such this is forgotten nowadays, but both my parents were doctors and they were taught to always ask their patients to undress completely and always take a good look at the patient's overall appearance. This does not mean they had to look very closely at every individual toe or at the soles, it was more of a brief over-view but it could still be helpful in diagnostics.
