What can I do to be able to fall asleep faster?!

Question: What can I do to be able to fall asleep faster?
I'm 18 year old male, and lately (the past year or so) i've been having problems falling asleep. I'm a senior in high school and these problems started to get to me. I skip classes, fall asleep at school, and in weekends i sleep till 2PM. I usually go to sleep at about 3-4 AM and have to wake at around 7:30 to get to classes at 8. I usually work on the PC until 2-3 AM and then go to bed. And now you'd say the problem is that I'm not staying in bed trying to fall asleep. I tried a few times to just sit in bed at around midnight and I couldn't fall asleep until 3-4 AM. I'm wondering if anyone knows some sort of remedies that I could take. And I'm talking about natural remedies, not sleeping pills or things like that. Thanks :)

Sounds like your sleep schedule (Circadian rhythm) is all messed up in general. Very common for people your age.

Melatonin is a hormone in the body that helps people fall asleep. In adults, it is usually released around 10PM but in teenagers it is around 1:00 AM. As people get older, the amount of melatonin decreases which is why older adults get up early.

Teenagers need 9 1/2 hours of sleep, but because the melatonin is released at 1AM, when you try to get up at 7 AM, your body fights you because it thinks it is the middle of the night.

So, it is actually a normal process in young adults and teens. As a matter of fact, some school systems have adapted their schedules to accommodate the sleep schedules of their teenage students.

But, how do you fix it?

The reason most people stay up into the wee hours is because they are awake; they are not awake because they are up doing things (generally). It is true that staring at a computer screen is not going to help. You want to stay away from bright light and sound stimulation.

Many people have different things that help them. A natural remedy is Melatonin (over the counter). Check with your doctor first and then ask what he or she would suggest for a dosage, but be assured it is NOT a sleeping pill. It is just what you use naturally only you can take it earlier in the evening (think about the feeling you get after a turkey dinner-similar thing).

Then, taking a warm shower and settling in with a book may just be the right combination for you.

This may help you change your rhythm enough to get in just enough extra hours to make waking up less painful.

I hope this helps you.

Good luck!

All great answers, read a book, watch some tv (a boring show lol) goonline etc. If all of that fails trick I learned long ago was to focus on one spot onmy ceiling, it literally drains your eyes to the point you will fall asleep and it usually only takes a few minutes. Sleeping pills, in my opinion don't work. Also if you smoke, try not to have acigarette an hour before bed, believe me that works also.

Good luck!

Listen to chilled music like slow songs n just lie in bed and it will help you fall asleep alos drink tea it helps you relax more

a typical problem with everyone......if you have a tv.....it should be on LOW when you start to sleep. BUT make sure you are on your side while watching...for some reason laying on your side allows your mind to slow down.
There is a nice gentle product that is sold at walmart and alot of other stores....called MELITONIN
Its a natural chemcial that the brain produces to sleep....when you are over tired or just wound up you are low in it......., you take about 1/4 of a pill.............lay on your side watching a LOW sounding tv......just loud enough to hear something in the background.....
now there is a product that is in........... PM nighttime sleep aid.......one of the greatest products thats in there is something that is sold for little children.....its called...childrens alergy....its a tall 8 oz bottle of pink liquid..................the stuff in this bottle is a GREAT aid for sleeping and staying asleep....it is NOT habit forming.....a Pharmisist(sp) told my husband about this and I tried it....it fabulous!
you get a bottle of childrens alergy liq.......and one bottle of melotinin
you take ..1/4 of a pill............and one tsp of the childrens alergy liq and then lay on your side with the tv low OR open a book.....I promise you, you will sleep thro the night.....
dont take a whole melotinin.....its too strong even for a 200 lb guy........just take 1/4 of a pill..that way you dont wake up groggy and you sleep well.
what these things do is .......get your brain in a routine of sleeping when you are ready...like when you were 6-8 years old.....sleep came easy then..your mind wasnt all boggled up with worries.
neither one of these are habit forming....you can take it for 30 days straight....60 days....and you wont NEED it.....
but after doing so...you will begin to fall asleep on your own....so take it for a month...start to relax and get some sleep....if you do need it everyday..................take it
if you wake up in the middle of the night.....take one tsp of the liq...and you will fall asleep within 30 min

dont worry...........you wont get addicted...that are safe

That sounds like my sleep schedule when I was in school.
Somethings that works for me everytime is counting my breaths.

When lying in bed begin counting back from 100.
*INHALE, EXHALE, ONE, INHALE, EXHALE, TWO, INHALE, EXHALE, TWO etc*
Make your breaths in and out long and deep, and chances are your mind will probably wander off and into sleep before you can reach zero.

This is not only good for falling asleep but the deep long inhales and exhales detoxifies and oxygenates your blood and tissue better than regular shallow breathing that we often center mostly in our chests. Use the full capacity of your lungs and expand your abdominals fully and then retract.

Don't go on the computer before you go to sleep. The bright light from the screen makes your eyes more awake. That is a big contributing factor. I would also go to bed a little bit earlier. This means that when you do have to stay up studying, when you are done, you will be tired enough to fall right to sleep. About 15 minutes before you go to sleep, you should also just not use electronics period. Maybe listen to some music at a soft volume just to wind down. Staring at a TV or computer before you go to sleep stimulates your mind and makes it harder for you to go to sleep. Good luck!! :)
