Father has sciatic pain in hip and leg, need help now!?

My father is suffering with awful pain in this hip and leg. Does anyone know if there's a natural cream or pill he can take to ease this pain. He's tried icy hot and the like. There's talk of hip replacement from his doctor but that won't take place for a while. I went to visit him today for Father's day and he was in much pain. Made me feel very sad that there was nothing I could do to ease his pain. He has arthritis too. Can anyone help me to help him.

Oh my, that must of been hard for you to see, I had that same pain and it is awful. But honestly, there isn't much to be done with out seeing a doctor. Plus if you see the right doctor you will probably find that a hip replacement isn't necessary. The pain is displace from the sciatic nerve which is probably being pressed by a herniated disc in his lower lumbar. For him to be in this type of pain from sciatica odds are that the disc is large. He needs a MRI, and to be treated by a Neurologist. Sounds crazy, but my doctor told me it was hip too, and it wasn't.
What you dad can do now to try to help is minimal but he can try alternating ice and heat 15 min at a time. Starting in the middle of his back between his spine and hip, then do the hip, and then thigh if needed. Also take 1 Aleve Liquid Gel, 1 Tylenol Extra. The Aleve has naproxen is what most doctors prescribe for arthritis pain, and tylenol is acetaminophen good for pain. He should lay on his back with knees bent and pillows under them, or on his side with pillows between his knees.
Sorry there isn't more to suggest, I wish there was because I know he is in agony right now.
