I am having pain in my lower back. What could be the cause of this?!

Question:

I am having pain in my lower back. What could be the cause of this?

Answers:

This could be many things. You might have just twisted while leaning over into the office drawers and pulled a muscle. Actually, most renal/kidney patients do not experience pain in that area, although the kidneys are located in the lower back.. (I have a kidney transplant patient in my immediate family.)

You can try home remedies unless you have swelling, dizziness, vomiting, severe pain, itchyness, or any unusal markings anywhere on your skin. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it is recommended that you seek emergency care right now.

If you do not have any other symptoms, then it is probably OK just to make an appointment to see your primary care physcian. Most likely the pain will be gone before the appointment.

Whether the pain persists or not I would recommend taking some notes.

Is the pain constant?
throbbing?
dull?
aching?
sharp?
shooting?
How long does the pain last?
Is there anything that makes it worse?
Is there anything that makes it better?
Exactly when did the pain start?
Can you remember lifting anything heavy, or reaching for something high?
Have there been any changes in your daily routine?
Were you have involved in a car accident or have you ever experienced any other injury?

The answers to all of these questions will help your medical provider diagnose what and where the problem is. Preparing the answers ahead of time is a proactive exercise that might also help you remember doing something that might have injured your back. Even if the pain goes away now, if caused by a serious injury, it will return. Keeping your own health journal can be a priceless tool in the future as we all become ill at some point.
