If you had a serious bone fracture in the 1950s, was medicine advanced enough to!

Question:

If you had a serious bone fracture in the 1950s, was medicine advanced enough to fix it?

If you had a serious bone fracture in the 1950s, was medicine advanced enough to fix it? Say...your leg broke in several places. Complete fracture. I'm sure it could be set, but would it be able to heal completely?
It's kinda weird but I'm working on a writing thing and don't know how to find an answer for this.

Hello Neopolitan
I am sorry that you are not getting much of a response:
I think this is for 2 reasons and we can hope I can offer some usefull information.
1. Because there are so many influencing factors, at play, in bone healing, it would take reams of discussion: Bone healing is dependent upon age, chrecteristics of and location of the fracture I.E. affecting a joint surface, nutrition, presense of complications I.E. infection : Nutrition : other disease processes I.E. diabetes: age of the person: If "immobilization" can be maintained during healing" closed reduction or open reduction (surgery): what and what kind if "hardware" is used, if any.
2.You may have difficulty resourcing this on the internet due to the fact that it is very technical information and directed at trained professionals who already have some understanding of orthopedic medicine and/or rehabilitation. Medline plus(bones/joints) has some information but it does not have the historical perspective that you seem to need. There are many site under "orthopedic medicine: and "bone fractures"

Of course orthopedics has developed many, many new procedure to treat fracture, especialy complex ones. The greatest strides have been made in joint replaements, new light weight and "neutral materials, "external fixation" versus pins and plates in and around the fracture.Bone "grafts" were not used at all in the 50's and are common place now.

As to the effectiveness that may have has then, would ultimately rely upon the degree of function or loss of funtion that occured I.E deformed limbs, joint pain, joint deterioration, infection, uneven or unstable gate (walking
).
I hope this helps some: If you can refrase or refocus your question, I may be offer more: Feel free to e-mail me
