Do i really have to completely stop smoking if I get nose surgery?!

Question:

Do i really have to completely stop smoking if I get nose surgery?

Answers:

Yes, you do. It takes up to a year for your nose to heal after surgery and smoking will not only slow that healing but may actually cause more scarring of tissue (requiring repair surgery). In addition, it is also damaging to the skin of the outer nose and face.

My brother, who has had both nose surgery (repair from childhood) and a really tough time quitting and staying that way (he stays off them for about 5 years, smokes for a year, then quits again) ended up with repair surgery even though he didn't start smoking again for like 3 years after his surgery. I think he said that smoking causes the blood vessels to constrict reducing blood flow.

My brother needs more help than most to stick to non-smoking due to several issues, but even the doctor has said with his long periods of not smoking, his lungs are much better than before he ever tried to stop. If you need help, remember, there are many ways to quit.
