How much does is cost for back surgery?!

Question:

How much does is cost for back surgery?

A friend of mine has a herniated disk and needs back surgery, but I have no idea how much it cost. Does anyone know?

Answers:

Get your friend to go to a chiropractor with a good reputation first. Regardless of whether or not your friend has insurance to cover chiropractic they should absolutely try this first. The success rate for surgeries of this type (disc herniation) is 50-60% with the best numbers, in studies done for the American Medical Association (meaning the numbers are probably inflated). Remember, if the chiropractor doesn't work, he'll be no worse for the wear, can either try another chiropractor or try the surgery but if the surgery fails, that's it, no more chances, he's stuck with whatever he's stuck with.

Now to answer your question, if he has good insurance/workmans comp if it happened on the job, then he probably won't have to pay a ton out of pocket. If he has no insurance, you're looking at upwards of $30,000 probably more when you figure in orthopedic devices, as well as physical therapy rehabilitation and other follow up services. Most chiropractors charge $20-50 a visit depending on your location, so it is much cheaper, and he has a good shot at getting it actually fixed.
