Breaking a finger?!

Question:

Breaking a finger?

how different does breaking a finger feel from just jamming it?

and how long would a jam hurt normally?

Additional Details

well i was playing basketball and went to steal the ball and i missed and he went forward and my finger bent backwards and i heard a distinguishable SNAP and immediatley did what i normally do when i jam it, open and close the hand. i have broken my finger before playing football but this is deifferent. when i broke my finger before i could barely move it at all, maybe it was because of where i broke it.

i can not bend my finger back to where i normally can, but i can still move it without too much pain, but i can not make a closed fist, and i dont see any bruising. this also happened about 5 hours ago if that makes a difference.

i ahve also iced it which has slowed the swelling and when i did ice it it hurt even more.

Answers:

Depends on how you injured it. Signs of a fracture would be an inability to move your finger through its full range of motion; this could also be caused by a "jam" or an injury to the joints. A more obvious sign would be extensive swelling, the feeling of bone ends rubbing together, and of course bone being exposed through the skin. If you can not obviously tell if it is broken take some over the counter pain relievers like ibuprofen, apply ice in a bag to the finger, and immobilize the finger by wrapping it to the adjacent finger. And if it still is a problem tomorrow make an appointment with a doctor, do not go to an emergency room unless you feel you are going to die or suffer permanent damage from the injury.

A snap that is not the bone breaking can be a Ligament or Muscle. Since you can not flex or extend your finger I would wait a day or two once the swelling has gone down and of you still can not move it make an appointment with your doctor a steroid shot could fix it.
