My mom burned herself-should she put ointment on or not?!

Question: My mom burned herself-should she put ointment on or not?
I can;'t really tell if it's second or first -degree, so I don't know if she should seek medical attention. She says it hurts a LOT. I already know no ice, cold water, butter, or oil, but what about cream and ointment? Please help!

Answers:

She should put cool compresses on it immediately to reduce the burning and damage. That might be all that is necessary. If it is her hand or foot she could hold it in cool water for a while, and repeat this every few minutes until the pain goes away. If it is just red with no blistering it is a first degree burn. If there is blistering it is a second degree burn. If there is blistering, do not pop the blisters. Do not put any ointment on the burn unless you have the gels made especially for burns. When she has cooled the burn sufficiently she should put loose gauze over it to protect it. She should take a pain medication.

Check what the Mayo Clinic says to determine exactly what you need to do. If she has been burned over a large section of her body, or if the burn is second degree and larger than about 3 inches in diameter she should see the doctor.
