Answers:

The biggest contributor to constipation in people is not getting enough water/fluids and not enough fiber.

Here are some suggestions that you can try now though:

-Drink plenty of water. Drink the recommended 8 glasses a day if you can. Your body pulls water out of your system to soften bowel movements. Additionally, try warm prune juice, or if you cant stand it warm, cold or room temperature will still work. Warm beverages just help stimulate the GI system.

-For your next several meals, eat food high in fiber. Try prunes and other fruits with the skin on, and whole grains. See my second source for some charts on how much fiber is in different foods.

-Try getting some exercise. Exercise, even walking, stimulates the GI system.

If these do not stimulate a bowel movement, the next step would be to try laxatives. Do not use them for more than a few days though, as you can become dependent on them. You can try something like Milk of Magnesia, Exlax, Dulcolax, or Metamucil. Any laxative on the market will work, really.

Avoid enemas unless prescribed by your doctor.

If you try all of the above treatments, including a few days of laxatives, and you still cannot produce a bowel movement, please see your doctor to be sure you are not impacted. In that case you may need stronger treatment.
