Has anybody experienced stiffness when sleeping?!

Has anybody experienced stiffness when sleeping?
It's been quite several times now that I experience a non-movement while sleeping. I fell asleep then suddenly I felt that my entire body went to freeze (No dreaming). I tried to wake up but my body won't move. While I could breath, I couldn't even open my eyes or simply move my finger. Often time I have to struggle for couple of minutes before I could come alive again.
It happened not once or twice but often.
Does anybody know what's happened?

Normally the brain inhibits bodily movement when you are asleep (so you don't act out your dreams). You seem to be waking up before the brain lets go
