Broken ribs?!

Question:

Broken ribs?

I rode my bike today and I landed on my left rib area onto a low fence. It knocked the wind out of me and I had to take a break for a moment.

Now I can feel tenderness even when I pick up something like a glass of water with my left hand. When I turn my body to face the right, it also hurts.....or when I hunch over a bit.

I can't take an xray at the moment since it is late right now over here (I'll try to go tomorrow but the xray place will probably be closed Saturday and Sunday) and I know doctors can't do anything to help other than say to put ice on it.

Other than the above mentioned things, what else can I do in the meantime?

Thanks for your help

Answers:

True, if all you have is a minor rib fracture, there isn't much to do for that than give pain medicine. However, there are other things that can go wrong whenever you have trauma to the chest, especially if you had "the wind knocked out of you" and are having a lot of pain on that side. It is entirely possible to have developed a pneumothorax (collapsed lung), which can become a medical emergency. The best thing to do would be to find an urgent care center that can see you after hours to be sure there isn't anything more serious going on than a broken rib.
