Is this normal, after having knee surgery?!

Question:

Is this normal, after having knee surgery?

It has been 6 months since I had my knee surgery..i had a patellar lateral release and hardly had any knee pain except during physical therapy. i had a cortizon shot a few months ago and it helped the pain but now the shot has worn off and I have to stand 9 hrs a day...my knee is back in the place it was before surgery.. i have extreme knee pain and swelling..is this normal? I havent worked out my knee in a mnth..could this be the reason because my muscle still isnt strong enough.

Answers:

No...you should not be experiencing those symptoms 6 months post-op. I treat patients all the time with the surgery you had and they are usually fine in 3 months. Either your surgery was not successful or more likely the rehab was not complete enough. Your pain will not get better if you are not allowed to rest for the next 10-14 days to allow the inflammation and swelling to decrease. My suggestion is to go back to the surgeon and let him/her know of the symptoms and go back to PT. If you go back to PT try to find a sports medicine PT b/c they are more experienced rehabing people with your surgery.
