When will my sprained ankle be back to 100%?!

Question:

When will my sprained ankle be back to 100%?

i sprained my ankle back in the third week of April. By the one month mark I was 98% better but it's been two months now and it hasn't improved the rest of the way since. It is very stiff and sore when I first get out of bed and every once in a while I'll do some kind of movement (like swim kicking) that will hurt like a mother... So when should it finally get all better?

Answers:

While the ankle may technically be "100%" ever again because you have had scar tissue develop, there is no reason to be experiencing the pain you describe 2 months post-injury. My suggestion is to lay off of your activity for 2-3 wk from today to allow the ankle to fully heal. If you did not before, then you should go to physical therapy to properly rehab the ankle over the next few wks. You ankle muscles are weaker and need to be strengthened, and your proprioception (basically your balance) is decreased. If you properly rehab then you should be painfree with ALL activities in 4-6 wks from the start of rehab.
