Should I take Paxil with Tramadol?!

Question:

Should I take Paxil with Tramadol?

I currently take paxil for anxiety, but also my pain specialist prescribed me Tramadol for my back pain, but I've heard this can be a dangerous combination? Does anyone know if these can be taken together- I'm fixing the anxiety, but am now back in pain.

Answers:

You shouldn't take opiates with SSRI medications because of a condition called Seratonin Syndrome, which can be fatal. Does your pain specialist know you are on the Paxil? Tramadol MAY be okay, because it is not technically an opiate, but binds to some of the same receptors. If your pain doc knows you are on the Paxil and prescribed the Tramadol anyway, then it is probably okay, but you can call his office and ask if you are worried. If not, then for sure call and tell him.

Here is the Wikipedia on Seratonin Syndrome, in the meantime: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/seratonin_s...
