I twisted my knee and something popped when I did it, did I tear something?!

Question:

I twisted my knee and something popped when I did it, did I tear something?

I have had knee surgery before on the ligament on the inside of my knee. I felt something pop when I did and now it is swollen, hot and hurts really bad. I can put some pressure on it but not much. I'm worried that I tore something or injured my meniscus. What can I do since I have no health insurance right now and can't afford a doctor?

Answers:

There are a number of things that can cause a "pop" upon twisting your knee. You could have torn your ACL or meniscus or possibly subluxed or dislocated your kneecap.

With the warmth, swelling, and ability to put SOMe weight on the leg suggests a patellar subluxation or dislocation.

At home treatment for a patellar dislocation is the typical RICE(rest, ice, compression, and elevate) for the first week or so. Also, when your kneecap pops out of groove some of the tendons that hold it in place are torn which makes it more likely to pop out in the future, my suggestion for this is to buy a knee brace with patellar tracking support. Walgreens has one that I used before getting one from my orthopedic surgeon, I forgot the brand but I know the kind you are looking for have a ring around the patellar opening for support. I will look around online and see if I can find the one that I used... it worked almost as well as the one I got from the ortho.
