Answers:

Painful clicking in the knee can be a sign of a torn meniscus, but other things as well. Other signs include tenderness along the joing line, locking or "giving way" of the knee, pain on either full flexion or straightening.

Tears in the outer periphery of the meniscus might heal since this is the only area of the meniscus that gets a good blood supply. Tears towards the middle and back are not known to have the ability to heal.

Many people can have tears that eventually become painless...often once the inflammatory process is broken (use of NSAIDS as recommended by their physician) or through cortisone injections and by restoration of normal mechanics of the knee with physical therapy and orthotics if needed (yet there is no good concensus as to who with meniscal tears will do well with PT and who will not.) Yet, many require surgery as the tear acts like a barrier during movement (imagine a small pebble in your shoe)...only surgery can remove it for these people.

If you are unable to seek another opinion, that is unfortunate and could lead to further problems in the future. Your only other sensible option is to modify your activity...if you like to jog, switch to swimming, if you walk to school/work try a bike...etc.
