Lasik surgery health insurance? Glasses are giving me headaches!?!

Question: Lasik surgery health insurance? Glasses are giving me headaches!?
I have been getting bad headaches just about everyday lately, if I take the glasses off the headache starts to go away, but I can't see well without them. Is there anyway my insurance would pay for lasik surgery because of this?

Answers:

There is no way for us to know; call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask.

Even if your insurance won't pay for it, I highly recommend getting Lasik. I had it done a little over a year ago, paid completely out-of-pocket, and it was the best money I have ever spent. My total cost was about $4k, which included the procedure, the pre-op workup, and 5 follow-up visits over the course of a year. Apparently, according to my surgeon, I am a "poster patient," and I would recommend this to anyone who is sick of glasses and contacts. I qualified for a "no-interest for 18 months" loan, which I am plenty able to make my monthly payments for; you may have a similar program in your area.

Anyway, I really do recommend it. I threw my glasses away, and my eyesight is actually better now than when I used glasses (20/10)!

EDIT: Just an FYI for the people claiming no insurance will cover it; about 3 months after I had mine done, my insurance took effect. They would have covered it 50%. To me, it wasn't worth it to wait, but they would have helped.

Unfortunately, lasik eye surgery is currently classed by every insurance company I know of as "elective surgery," so despite it being the best alternative for you, they probably won't pay for it. You can still try to get a doctor or ophthalmologist to write you a letter stating that no other medically available option will work for you (or at least that lasik will work the best) and submit it to your insurance company to see if you can get at least partial coverage.

Good luck!

Lasik will not be covered in any situation. However, if you can find a neuro-ophthalmologist to find out the linkage between your headache and wearing spectacles, i think a portion of Lasik cost can be covered by private insurance.
