Answers:

Did you fall on it? The most common way to injure the scaphoid is to fall on an outstretched hand (or FOOSH). They happen a lot in car accidents, also.

If you stretch your thumb out like a hitchhiker, at the base of your thumb is a depression or indent. If you feel the bone there, that is your scaphoid.

Does it hurt a lot when you grip something or stretch out your thumb? If it does, you need to see a doctor. He'll take an x-ray and should put your hand in a splint. If it is broken, they will put you in a cast. Sometimes it requires surgery, but not usually.

If you don't get it checked out, the bone could heal wrong or not heal and would form a nonunion. This prevents blood flow to the bone cells and can cause the cells in the area to die.

Avoid heavy lifting and lots of wrist motion until you see the doctor.
