How long should it take for the partially torn ucl in my thumb to heal?!

Question:

How long should it take for the partially torn ucl in my thumb to heal?

I injured my thumb on Easter Sunday. I went to the doctor the following day. X-rays showed the thumb wasn't broken. A couple weeks later, it was still very weak so I was refered to a hand surgeon. He diagnosed me with a partial UCL tear. I was in a thumb splint for about 3 weeks and have been doing therapy to increase the strength and range of motion for almost two weeks. While the joint feels somewhat more stable than when I first injured it, I have noticed no improvement since I began therapy. It has been over two months since the original injury. Is it normal for this injury to take this long to heal or is it possible I've done more damage than they originally thought? No MRI was done to diagnose the UCL tear. Should I give it more time before I say something to the doctor?

Answers:

Typically doctors go with the least invasive route to treat your thumb first and that is PT. If PT fails then it may be necessary to have it surgically repaired. I would be patient for a few more weeks with the PT. I assume that you have a follow-up appointment with the surgeon in several weeks and the future course of treatment will be determined at that time. Be patient and trust the surgeon for now.
