Why do spider bites get bigger when you scratch?!

Question:

Why do spider bites get bigger when you scratch?

I got a spider bite 3 days ago it was just a spec and then it grew to be the size of a dime why is that.

Answers:

The phenomenon is not restricted to only spider bites, but applies to all kinds of bites and iteches.

The sensation of itch is due to secretion of a neurotransmitter called neuropeptide Y, and also somewhat due to histamine (that's why to treat such problems antihistaminics are used).

Basically what happens in inflammation is that the local blood supply increases (that's why the area becomes red and warm), and when u scratch even more blood reaches over there, which brings with it further more of inflammatory mediators (like histamine) and u feel like scratching further, so it's a vicious cycle.

As a temporary relief u can apply ice over the area.

Hope this helps. Bye. TC.
