Percocet vs Oxycontin?!

Question: Percocet vs Oxycontin?
I've been taking pain meds for a few years now and I've recently been prescribed 10/325 Percs 4 a day by my pain management clinic. They aren't really doing the job, I have severe back pain. They said the next step up would be Oxycontin which I think I know about. Where I'm confused it this: Everything I read says I would be taken down to 2 pills a day because the Oxycontin is a slow release. But would I get 2 of the 10 mgs or would they up the dose? Does anyone know how this works? I just feel like if the 10 mg is being stretched throughout 12 hours, how is that going to help better? I appreciate any input.

Thanks

Answers:

OxyContin and Percocet both contain the active ingredient oxycodone, which is an opioid analgesic and an agonist of mu receptors in the brain.
You're currently receiving 40 mg of instant-release oxycodone per day, which is approaching the upper end of Percocet dosing. Generally speaking, when converting from instant release to controlled release, the total daily dose is increased a bit and the dosing interval is halved. Given that the detrimental cognitive effects of oxycodone are as profound as they are, however, you will probably start out at about 20 mg per day (around 10-15 mg every 12 hours), and then increase in dose if necessary.
Even though it sounds counterintuitive to give less drug for a longer amount of time, it does work. The pharmacokinetics of opioid metabolism, in relation to duration of release and time of administration, actually allow the average concentration-time curve to 'flatten out' and remain at the effective concentration range longer than the immediate release formulation of the same drug. Essentially, even though you're receiving the same physical amount of oxycodone, your body 'sees' it as being a larger dose than it actually is.

I too suffer with back pain, Percocet does nothing for me! Oxycontin is the only thing that works for me!! Hope you feel better!!

Sorry, I don't know about them.
I do know that you have pinched muscles in your back causing you that pain. Pinched muscles can be gotten rid of to get rid of the pain. Here's how to free up your back muscles to get rid of the pain if you don't want to keep on with the pills:
Back:
(do from a sitting position)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly pull down on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.
For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.
