Need help taping a thumb for volleyball.?!

Question:

Need help taping a thumb for volleyball.?

My daughter has a bruise on the bottom joint(farthest from the nail). She thought she jammed it. After icing and rest, it was feeling and looking better. Only slight swelling after injury. She went and played again after a few days and without re-injuring it that she remembers, It looked bruised again and was hurting again. I've taped other fingers (as well as ankles, knees, wrists...)but a thumb is a new one. Anyone with a trainers background or other relevant medical background, I would appreciate some help. My daughter isn't the star of the team by any means, but she is really working hard after sitting out a year.

Thanks,

Joe S

Answers:

While taping is a good thing for her thumb I would advise you have her see an orthopedic doctor to assess her thumb. She may have a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament (known as skiers thumb or gamekeepers thumb).
To tape the thumb wrap a couple loops of the tape around the wrist and tear. Then wrap a couple loops around the palm making sure you dont tape the knuckles. Then run a piece of tape from the wrist on the side of the palm, up in between the thumb and index finger and around so that you end up right near where you started that piece and tear. Do that twice. Next run a couple pieces of tape diagonally from the palm, around the thumb to the back of the wrist. Finish by wrapping a couple more loops around the wrist to hold down the tape around the thumb that you just did.
