Because you have such a large amount of nerves there, they trigger quite easily if hit etc. And because there are so many nerves there's more pain..
The human body has developed to contain a lot of nerve endings in that area, to basically warn your body that hitting it, does damage.
Because this area contains a lot of nerve endings.
