Knee dislocations?!

Question:

Knee dislocations?

I have a problem with my kneecap dislocating. It's been doing this for most of my life. I can just walk and it will go out. I've also had it go out when I've jumped up for a block in volleyball, stepping around a corner, pivoting my body without moving my legs, and even going to the bathroom.

Yeah, it's nasty.

I was wondering if anyone else has this problem (and I know people do because my fiance and I have the same problem!) and I was wondering some of the following:

1) What are you doing when it goes out?
2)How do you put it back in... or do you let it go back in on its own?
3) How do you take care of it afterwards? Do you baby it? Do you walk on it right away?

I'm waiting until September to see a specialist on this because my current insurance won't pay for it, but my fiance's insurance is awesome.

Thanks for anything you'll give me!!!

Answers:

I have never had it happen to me but I treat people all the time who have this happen. If you want to put it back in place on your own you have to grasp the knee cap in your fingertips and lift it slightly away from your leg just a little and guide it back in place. What can really help you is physical therapy to strengthen your hip muscles so that you dont use your quads so much.
