Numb arm when sleeping?!

Question:

Numb arm when sleeping?

Occasionally I fall asleep on my arm and its so numb I cant pick it up. I can BARELY drag it down to my side so the blood can rush back into place. What I wonder is could this actually cut off my circulation if it goes on too long before I wake up?

Answers:

I doubt that this is a circulation problem. Most likely you are compressing either your median nerve at the wrist, the ulnar nerve at the elbow, or your radial nerve higher up. If your entire hand is numb, it is likely your median or radial. If it just your 4th and 5th digits, it is likely your ulnar. If it goes on long enough, it can cause symptoms during the day...i.e. carpal tunnel syndrome. Wrist splints can help if it is the median nerve, which you would only wear at night.
